What's In A Name?
Bernice S. Malkin (1930-2021)
I've been asked many times, "Why 'Pantera'"?
First and foremost, it is an homage to my longtime, very dear friend, Bernice S. Malkin. Bernice was a California CSR from 1958 until her retirement in 1991, when she began devoting all her time to golfing, grandchildren and sculpting. For an extended period during her tenure as an official in Los Angeles County, Bernice reported in the courtroom of Bernard Jefferson (author: California Evidence Benchbook).
Years into her retirement, while on a sculpting retreat in Pietrosanto, Italy, Bernice purchased a 300-pound block of black Italian marble that she cut, shaved and polished for a year until a sleek cat emerged that she named "Pantera Negra." It was then and remains my favorite of her more than 40 pieces of sculpture.
I was looking for an agency name that didn't follow the Surname & Associates template. And with so many CAT (computer-aided transcription) names in the industry, when a client mentioned it in a light moment, the light went on. And Pantera Court Reporters was born.
Pantera Negra resides in our Ventura office.
